Seven days is the sweet spot for Hanoi. Long enough to get past the jetlag and actually settle in, short enough that you won’t run out of things to do. This itinerary covers the city, an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, a second overnight trip (your choice of Sapa or Ninh Binh), and a dental tourist alternative that maps treatment around recovery time.

Days 1–2: Hanoi City Deep Dive

Spend your first two days getting under the skin of the Old Quarter before the overnight trips pull you away.

Day 1 is orientation. Walk the 36 streets of the Old Quarter in the morning — each historically named after the trade it housed, silk to tin. Hit Hoan Kiem Lake at sunrise when locals are doing tai chi and the city is quiet. Afternoon: Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (40,000 VND entry) or Temple of Literature depending on your interest. Evening: Dong Xuan Market for street snacks, then a water puppet show at Thang Long Theatre (~200,000 VND).

Day 2 goes deeper. Hoa Lo Prison in the morning is sobering and worth two hours. Lunch at Bun Cha Huong Lien — the spot Anthony Bourdain made famous, about 60,000 VND a bowl. Afternoon: wander the French Quarter architecture. Evening: rooftop bars on Nha Tho Street or Bia Hoi Corner for cheap draught beer at 7,000 VND a glass.

Days 3–4: Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise

Depart your hotel by 7:00 am for the roughly 3.5-hour transfer to Ha Long Bay. Book a 3-star overnight cruise — expect to pay $130–$160 per person, which includes all meals, kayaking, and cave visits.

Highlights on the standard route:

  • Luon Cave kayaking — paddle through a limestone arch into a hidden lagoon
  • Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) — one of the largest grottoes in the bay, lit-up stalactites
  • Seafood dinner on deck — fresh squid, prawns, and clams as the sun sets over the karsts

You return to Hanoi on Day 4 afternoon, tired in the best possible way. See our full guide at Hanoi to Ha Long Bay for booking tips and what to pack.

Day 5: Recovery Day in Hanoi

Don’t fight the fatigue — lean into it. This is the day Hanoi gives you back.

Morning: sleep in, then a proper pho bo breakfast at a sidewalk stall (40,000–60,000 VND). Afternoon: a full-body massage in Hoan Kiem — budget clinics charge $15–$25 for 60–90 minutes, and quality is consistently good. Evening: a dedicated street food circuit — Banh Mi 25, Xoi Yen sticky rice, and a bowl of Bun Bo Nam Bo to finish.

Days 6–7: Choose Your Overnight Trip

You have two solid options depending on energy level and what you want from the trip.

Take the overnight sleeper train from Ga Hanoi station at 10:00 pm — a soft sleeper berth costs around $25–$35 each way. Arrive Lao Cai at 6:00 am, then a 45-minute bus to Sapa town.

Day 6 in Sapa: Fansipan cable car (750,000 VND) for views over Vietnam’s highest peak, then walk down through Cat Cat Village — a Hmong ethnic minority village with terraced fields, waterfalls, and weavers at work. Overnight in a Sapa guesthouse ($20–$40).

Day 7: morning trek through the Muong Hoa Valley rice terraces before catching the afternoon bus back to Lao Cai for the return train. Full logistics at Hanoi to Sapa.

Option B: Ninh Binh (Quieter, Easier)

A two-hour bus or hired car south of Hanoi. Trang An Landscape Complex (a UNESCO site) is done by rowing boat through cave-cut limestone — a gentler version of Ha Long Bay on a river. Combine with Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Vietnam’s 10th-century royal capital.

Rent a bicycle in Ninh Binh town ($3–$5/day) to move between sites at your own pace. Stay one night at a guesthouse ($15–$30) and return to Hanoi on Day 7 afternoon. Better value, far fewer tourists than Ha Long, and genuinely beautiful.

Dental Tourist Version: 7-Day Treatment + Travel

If you’re combining dental work with this itinerary, the schedule maps cleanly:
