Four days gives you enough time to absorb Hanoi properly and still escape the city for one of northern Vietnam’s most rewarding excursions. Here is how to structure it — and how dental tourists can weave appointments neatly into the schedule.
Days 1–3: The Hanoi City Circuit

Day 1 — Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem
Arrive, check in, and walk the 36 streets of the Old Quarter in the afternoon. Evening at the Hoan Kiem Lake shore when the streets close to traffic. Dinner at a bia hoi corner table.

Day 2 — Ho Chi Minh Complex and West Lake

Temple of Literature opens at 8:00 am and is best before the tour groups arrive. Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is a short walk south. Finish at Dong Xuan Market for souvenir shopping and street food. Day 4: Choose Your Adventure
Day 4 is where the itinerary forks. Pick the option that fits your time, budget, and energy level.
Option A — Ninh Binh Day Trip (Recommended for 4-Day Trips)
Distance: 90 km south of Hanoi
Drive time: 1.5–2 hours each way

Ninh Binh is Vietnam’s “inland Ha Long Bay” — limestone karsts rising from rice paddies and flooded valleys. A day trip covers three highlights comfortably.
Trang An Grottoes — UNESCO World Heritage boat tour through cave-tunnels and open lagoons. The rowing is done by your guide; you sit and take it in. Duration: roughly 2.5 hours on the water.
Mua Cave — A 500-step climb to a hilltop viewpoint overlooking the Trang An basin. The panorama is one of the best in northern Vietnam. Strenuous but short — allow 45 minutes up and down.
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital — Optional stop at the ruins of Vietnam’s 10th-century capital, 10 minutes from Trang An. Most tours include it as a drive-past with a 30-minute walk.
Most organised tours depart Hanoi at 7:30–8:00 am and return by 6:00–7:00 pm. Book through your hotel or any reputable tour desk in the Old Quarter.

Option B — Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise (Best for 5-Day Trips)
Depart: 7:30 am Day 4
Return: 6:00 pm Day 5

If you have five days, an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay is worth the extra day. You board a junk in Ha Long City after a 3.5-hour drive, spend the afternoon kayaking or swimming, sleep on the water, and return the next afternoon.
